View the Scientific Program

The 2008 scientific program will focus around 5 distinct streams which will appeal to a wide range of CR professionals, researchers, practitioners and people interested in entering this rewarding industry:

1. Research
2. Investigators
3. Regulation & Policy
4. Careers & Education
5. CCRE’s

Within the framework of these stream are sub-themes covering an extensive range of topics related to the CR industry which allows a broader scope for discussion.

The Conference will enable researchers, practitioners and industry to discuss issues in recent research and practice and examine factors that currently effect clinical research nationally and internationally. With such a wide range of discipline areas being catered for, it is an opportunity to share knowledge, and reflect on the policy and practice implications of research findings and the future of the profession.

A new initiative in the program this year is the introduction of oral abstract presentations. The Scientific Program Committee will choose abstracts from the submissions to present their abstract in a 15 minute presentation during the Conference. Submit an abstract

Abstract themes:

  • Indigenous health research
  • Research in chronic disease prevention
  • Increasing translational research in Australia
  • Clinical research training
  • Raising the bar - improving research quality
  • Partnering science with industry
  • Facilitating ethics review in Australia
  • Clinical research governance and regulation
  • How to form a successful CCRE

A series of pre and post Conference Satellite Workshops will also be offered. Details of the Workshops will be listed on this website shortly.

Streams

Investigators:
Australian clinical researchers have a long history of collaborative research projects, this years conference will focus on international collaboration and large scale trials as well as the growing areas of mental health and paediatric research. Speakers will cover the challenges involved in multi-national trials and the increasing globalisation of trials that combine first and developing world countries. The stream will also focus on Australian researchers roles in leading international studies. The specific challenges in conducting broad scale mental health studies in the young and paediatric studies in general will be discussed on the second day.

Research, Education & Ethics:
The research, education and ethics stream will focus on the importance of developing the Australian clinical research skills and capability base through education programmes, the development of new clinical research models and the focussing of research on clinically relevant questions and health outcomes. Australian clinical researchers are highly regarded in the international arena, however very few researchers and research staff have formal training or qualification in clinical research. In this stream both national and internationally recognised certification programmes will be discussed. A discussion of various models for clinical research will be held, together with an examination of the role that CCREs play in clinical research education. The benefit to society of clinical research is a key consideration for all stakeholders involved in the research, the stream will conclude with a workshop on combining education, research models and clinical relevance.

Regulation & Policy:
Clinical research is subject to numerous regulations and is often undertaken as an adjunct to core services within the public hospital system. The Regulation and Policy stream will look at how clinical researchers can participate more broadly in research activities within the public health system whilst also meeting their regulatory obligations in the most efficient way. Topics of utilising public hospital infrastructure, IT systems and health records will be covered as well as a discussion of progress in streamlining multi-centre ethical review. An important aspect of this stream will be the discussion of regulatory auditing by domestic and international regulators.

Clinical Partnerships Forum:
At CRX07, Australia's Centres of Clinical Research Excellence showcased the best of Australia's capabilities in clinical research, and introduced themselves to the clinical research community as a group for the first time. This year, we will explore the quality of the connectivity between the players that come together to initiate and then make clinical and community use of the outcomes of clinical research. Through a panel of prominent Australians, the session will demonstrate, discuss and debate the degree of connectedness that exists today and what is (or should) be done to allow us all to be confident that the investment in Australia's clinical research is delivering the best health outcomes.
